Israel’s attack on Doha: “Appeasing Israel does not save you”

There are appropriate conditions for building a counterforce

Israel’s attack on Doha surprised many. It demonstrated that Israel dares to strike even a country that is neither a party to nor supportive of the Palestinian cause.

What else did it reveal? UWI author, historian and political scientist Mehmet Perinçek shared his views.

Israel’s recent attacks on Doha have clearly shown that Israeli aggression cannot be curtailed through condemnations, agreements like the Abraham Accords, or complaints to the US. Similarly, international law alone is not enough to stop Israeli aggression. Even though numerous rulings have been issued against Netanyahu and Israel by international courts and institutions, Israel has consistently ignored them and has, in fact, escalated its aggressions.

So much so that even Arab governments seeking to appease Israel are not spared from becoming targets of its attacks. This is also true for Syria. Despite the government of Ahmed al-Sharaa expressing shared threats with Israel and exploring potential avenues for cooperation, Syria remains a de facto target of Israeli strikes, being continuously hit by Israeli forces.

How the US is facilitating Israeli aggression

Israel’s attack on Doha also highlighted the deep level of cooperation between the US and Israel. It has become evident that complaining to Washington or seeking remedies from the US is futile when it comes to stopping Israeli aggression. On the contrary, the US often distracts and ensnares countries targeted by Israel, making them easier prey. A similar dynamic can be observed in Syria: while US officials publicly express support for the country’s territorial integrity and appear critical of the YPG/PYD, in practice they pursue policies that contribute to Syria’s fragmentation.

The reality of US-Israel relations should serve as a strong warning for the Turkish government. Any attempt to chart a joint path with Washington will fail to ensure the territorial integrity of both Türkiye and Syria.

Not just Arab and Islamic world

The only strategy capable of stopping Israel’s aggression is one that unites not just the Arab and Islamic world, but the entire Western Asian and Eurasian region against it. Israel’s belligerence can only be stopped by creating a counterforce strong enough to confront it.

There are appropriate conditions for building this counterforce. From Russia to China, from Turkic Republics to Pakistan, the major powers of Eurasia share grievances regarding Israel’s aggression and the Atlantic strategies in general. This provides the potential to form a broad and robust alliance.

Foreign bases as a threat

Finally, the fact that British aircraft refueled Israeli jets from bases in Qatar is a stark reminder that Türkiye must close all US-used bases on its territory, Incirlik and Kürecik in the first place, to prevent them from being used against Türkiye itself. These foreign bases within Türkiye constitute centers capable of striking the country from within. The incident in Qatar demonstrates that aircraft operating from foreign bases in a sovereign country can very well be used to target that country itself.
