Türkiye’s role in the European security system

Holding an umbrella for Zelensky.

By Mehmet Perinçek

After the phone call between Trump and Putin, the peace process in Ukraine has gained more momentum. When we look at the world, a picture has emerged. On one side we have Russia and the US, with the Putin-Trump initiative. On the other side, we see the UK and the hawks of Europe. Britain and the hawks of Europe continue to prevent peace in Ukraine and further provoke Ukraine against Russia.

Armament in Europe at full speed

The militarization of Europe has accelerated with the US and Russia interacting more frequently. We are looking at the day of the phone call between Putin and Trump:

The Bundestag voted to lift the cap on the budget deficit of 0.35% of GDP per year (debt brake) in order to allocate €500 billion to defense and security. The German government intends to strengthen its armed forces with six F127-class frigates from ThyssenKrupp and 20 Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets from BAE Systems Corporation.

Macron has pledged to increase orders for Rafale fighters and invest €1.5 billion in the airbase as part of a nuclear deterrence program. The statement was made during a visit to the Luxey-les-Bains airbase in eastern France, which is a key strategic site for the country’s air force. Earlier, Macron urged representatives of the defense industry to speed up the pace of arms production.

Poland has placed anti-personnel mines on the border with Russia and Belarus.

These examples can of course be multiplied.

Erdoğan supports Ukraine’s ‘NATO membership’

So where does Türkiye stand here? We look at Türkiye. Its relations with the Kyiv regime have become closer. We all saw the Erdoğan-Zelenskyy meeting in Ankara. While no other country, not even the NATO countries stated such thing, Erdoğan announced that he supports Ukraine’s entry into NATO. With this, delegations are coming to Kyiv. There are many, many, many more meetings. There is even talk of Erdoğan’s visit to Kyiv.

Zelenskyy will not be in that chair tomorrow

There may be some promises from Kyiv, but Zelensky will not be in office tomorrow and none of these promises will materialize. Unfortunately, Türkiye has a close relationship with the UK on this issue. Britain’s provocative role in the Ukraine issue is now recognized even by the United States and is being viewed negatively by the whole world.

What does it mean to produce security for Europe?

On the other hand, there is talk of a new security system in Europe. Türkiye is taking on the role of the guardian of Europe’s security. Statements are being made one after the other at the highest level.

So, against whom is the security system of Europe, in which Türkiye wants to play a leading role? Well, of course against Russia and all Eurasian countries. In fact, Türkiye has the task of holding an umbrella for Zelensky here. At the same time, the use of the Turkish army for European aggressive purposes is being offered by Ankara to the hawks of Europe.

What were the pro-American powers in Türkiye saying in the 1990s? “Türkiye should create security for the West.” Now, in a situation where the West has completely collapsed, where the Atlantic system has disintegrated, the Erdoğan government is reasserting the same policy and arguing that Türkiye should produce security for Europe.

Sharing the defeat of Europe and the UK

But we see that Europe is the loser of the war. With the Bidens, Europe has really failed on this issue. Trump is withdrawing from this mistake. But Europe insists on the course of Biden. Is there any chance of success? Absolutely not.

As long as the economic and political crises in Europe continue like this, they will deepen and even the power of the hawks in Europe has already begun to shake and the days will come when they lose their power in the coming period. Türkiye will be a partner in that destiny. Ankara will be the partner in both the prevention of the end of the war and the defeat of Europe and the Biden’s.

The danger in Syria

Following the UK’s lead, Türkiye is actually being dragged to a very dangerous position in this regard. In addition, Türkiye is further estranging itself from Russia due to these policies. Türkiye had already reduced its relations with Russia and Iran to a very low level due to its role in the overthrow of Assad in Syria. It had drawn a serious reaction from Russia and Iran.

Türkiye’s isolation under these conditions, in which the US and Israel are focusing on the Eastern Mediterranean, poses a great danger for Türkiye’s national security and economy. Türkiye is now in a position to confront Israel, the US, Russia and Iran in Syria. This puts Türkiye in an incredibly unfavorable position in eliminating the PKK/PYD threat in Syria.
