Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed to create a gas hub in Türkiye to supply gas to Europe. Turkey’s President Erdoğan responded positively. Both Presidents said that stakeholders of the hub would determine the gas price, expecting positive effects.

The proposal comes against the backdrop of the conflict in Ukraine. Gas flows from Russia to Europe via the Nord Stream have essentially stopped and are being substituted by more expensive US LNG. Can Europeans completely abandon Russian gas and what would the consequences be? How and where can Russia export its gas? What are the prospects for Turkey to become a key player in the European gas market?
